9. The 7 Key Chords - BAGED Strings

  • I introduced the chords starting from the heaviest to the lightest strings to make them easier to remember.
  • However, on a guitar, chords are actually arranged along the fretboard in a different order.
  • They are rooted successively on the B, A, G, E, and D strings.
    • This spells the word "BAGED".
  • The graph below illustrates this arrangement, showing where you root the C major chord on the B, A, G, E, and D strings.
  • This is what the C major chord looks like at these different positions.
  • If you're writing a song and find that playing the C major chord rooted on the B string is too low in pitch or inconvenient on the fretboard, you can root the C major chord on another BAGED string.
  • This allows you to find a pitch and position that better suits your needs.
  • This works for all chords.
